Shopify for Furniture Stores: What to Set Up Before You Launch
Shopify is a good fit for most furniture stores. You own the store, it's easy to update and it handles payments. But out of the box, Shopify is set up for small items, not living rooms.
Here's what to set up so your Shopify store works the way furniture shoppers actually shop.
1. Organize by collection, not just by category
Categories like "Sofas" and "Beds" are useful, but shoppers often want a full set. Group products by series too, so the bed, dresser, nightstand and chest from the same line live together.
Then build pages that show each series as one row a shopper can swipe through. That's the closest thing to walking your showroom.
2. Decide how to handle configurations
Sectionals, recliners and dining sets come in many versions. You have two choices:
One product with options. Good when the photo doesn't change much.
Separate products, grouped together. Better when each version looks different, like a 3-piece vs. 5-piece sectional.
Either way, the shopper should be able to compare versions on one page and see the picture change when they pick an option.
3. Put widths and key sizes on the product card
The first question most shoppers have is "Will it fit?" Show the width on the card in the collection, not only deep in the product page. Add full dimensions on the product page.
4. Show color swatches early
Show small color swatches on each product card. Shoppers can see what's available without clicking into every item.
5. Load your vendor catalogs in bulk
Most furniture stores carry the same brands across hundreds of items. Typing them in one by one takes forever and leads to mistakes. Import your vendor product feed, then clean up titles, photos and collections in bulk.
6. Make delivery and financing clear
Furniture is a big purchase. Before shoppers buy, they want to know:
Where you deliver, and how much it costs
How long delivery takes
If financing is available
Your return and damage policy
Put this on every product page and in the cart, not just in the footer.
7. Let shoppers reach a real person
Many furniture buyers want to ask a question before they buy. Make your phone number easy to tap on mobile, and add your showroom address and hours. A website that brings people into the store is still doing its job.
8. Test everything on a phone
Before you launch, go through the whole site on your phone: browse a collection, pick a color, add to cart and check out. If anything feels slow or confusing, fix it first.
